Description of the research group
Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) is the largest engineering school in Portugal and supports BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Mining Engineering. The Centro de Recursos Naturais e Ambiente (CERENA), a research unit from IST, supports the training and education of IST in these areas. IST will provide training in scientific disciplines related to the characterization of waste deposits through innovative methods of geophysical inversion and stochastic mine planning with real-time assimilation of direct measurements with different resolution and uncertainty levels. Research facilities:
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV): Several UAV equipped with multiple sensors (optical cameras and LiDAR) for mapping and monitoring land surfaces with unprecedented detail.
Scientific computing hub: Scientific computing hub supported in an OpenStack open-source virtualization platform, that manages a pool of 1368 computing cores with a total RAM of 6 528GB; raw storage of 1656 TBytes complemented by 8 GPUs that jointly sustain a computing power of up to 125.6 single-precision flops.
CERENA GeoLab: Geoscience and geoeng lab equipped to study raw materials from mineralogical, etrological, geochemical & geomechanical characterization and mineral and waste processing tests including an X-Ray microtomography, a JK Batch Flotation Cell, a core flooding unit and a High-Pressure Tri-Axial Cell GCTS.
High-performance IT infrastructure: A high-performance workstation with Core i9 7900x with 64GB RAM and two dual Nvidia 1070Ti is available to process big data (technical specification at the end of 2022).
CERENA Imaging: Lab Imaging lab equipped with a nanoCT (SkyScan 2214) to imaging natural and non-natural materials at the nanoscale.
