Università della Calabria (UNICAL)
Description of the research group
The University of Calabria (UNICAL) was established in 1972 in Cosenza (Italy) to spearhead the development of this Italian southern region. At present, UNICAL includes 14 Departments and more than 30.000 students.
The Department of Environmental Engineering (DIAm) is composed by 40 professors and researchers, 15 technical- administrative units and several PhD and postdoc students. Among the 10 Doctoral Programmes existing at UNICAL, DIAm coordinated the Doctoral School SIACE “Environment, Construction and Energy Science and Engineering” which aims to train early-stage researchers able to address the sustainability challenges based on a trans-sectoral approach.
The laboratories of “Chemical Fundamentals of Membrane Technologies” at DIAm-UNICAL (>300 m2) gather facilities for a comprehensive characterization and testing of membranes and membrane operations, including: Pressure-driven Membrane Systems (MF, UF, NF, RO), Electrodialysis/RED, Membrane characterization platform: UV/VIS, FT IR/ATR/NIR, GC-MS multi-shot pyrolyzer, DSC-TG, Porosimetry, NRS-Laser MicroRaman Spectrometer, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Optical/Fluorescence Microscopy, Zeta potential, AFM, SEM, EDX-XRD. The labs guarantee the on-line access to electronic library, comfortable desk-stations and access to research facilities. A portfolio of +30 courses is available from the SIACE Doctoral School to provide all necessary background to complete tasks foreseen for the training program.
